review This Might Sting a Bit

Lerina Hotchkis Wilson

“This Might Sting a Bit” is an absolute ‘must read’. Laying bare the turmoil of addiction and everything that goes with it. A story filled with hilarity and heartbreak. A brutal journey overcome with unparalleled determination, love and support. I have massive admiration for the Author’s courage to share her story. Thank you Claire. A story of the greatest courage and determination, so beautifully written.

It made me laugh out loud….. and cry. Such mixed emotions.

Such a well written book with her descriptions of life on her farm taking me right there. Even though addiction is such a deadly and traumatic illness she handles it with love and compassion and courage. I felt like I was part of her family and am so chuffed it was recommended to me- which I will do to my friends. I hope she has plans for another soon. I am actually going to read it again I enjoyed it so much!

A massive thank you to Claire for sharing this masterpiece with us – I am the high school therapist at Generation Schools Imhoff and received a copy just in time for the Christmas holiday.
I soaked this book up as quickly as the sun tanned my skin! As a mental health practitioner, I am so blessed to see approachable narratives about psychiatric medication, painkillers and the danger of stereotyping a ‘druggie’.
I will continue to recommend this book to teens and adults alike.
Stories are how we heal so thank you!

I flippin LOVED Claire Adlam’s novel (her first I may add). It’s loosely based on her life. Mostly, it’s a wonderful family tale with a heavy dose of prescription medication addiction. I snort laughed, giggled, sobbed and screamed at the characters as I was so immersed. (heads up, Grandpa is the best) “This Might Sting a bit” is a good good read. Unfortunately, I turned the last page last night, sob. Get it for your girl mates, young or old. You will read it and become quite unable to close it, so you’ll read it on the loo, in the car waiting for kids and then you will be so glad that you were gifted it for Christmas. Just a great read.

Just finished this book. Devoured every word. Could barely put it down.

Survived growing up in Zimbabwe and have probably maintained my sanity and dignity; and do believe that in just about every one of us here with similar backgrounds there is a story of gut wrenching agony, heartache and the same amount of love, compassion and generosity.
This should be the set book for O level, at every level, for every student, not only here in Zimbabwe, but the world over where the insidious evil of drug use exists to destroy our youth and rob families of their loved ones…..

I’ve literally just finished this wonderful book this weekend! I cannot wait for the next book. Such a real story … for some reason we think our literature from Zim won’t be relevant on the world stage but this could be a story from anywhere…. well written! Thank you Claire

This is such a good book – I simply could not put it down – well done, Claire. How I wish The Two Hays was a reality for our country!

Adlam skillfully combines sharp wit with deep sensitivity as she relates the story of Kat Hay. A beautifully written story of addiction, family, friendship and love. Well worth reading!

Thoroughly enjoyed this. It stung very much. So so real and true. An excellent read.
